5A DI State Champs: Barbers Hill Lady Eagles

AUSTIN — Behind a dominant performance from junior pitcher Macie Bryant and a relentless offensive attack, Barbers Hill rolled past Aledo 11-0 in five innings Friday afternoon at Red & Charline McCombs Field to capture the UIL Class 5A Division I State Championship. The victory marked the program’s second state title.

The championship carries extra significance for a Barbers Hill program that has become a fixture on the state’s biggest stage. The Lady Eagles have now reached the UIL State Tournament in 2006, 2014, 2018, 2021, 2025 and 2026. Their previous state championship came in 2021, while last season’s journey ended with a heartbreaking loss to Melissa in the state title game. This year, Barbers Hill returned to Austin determined to finish the job.

After two scoreless innings, the Lady Eagles broke through in the third. Maddi Ray ignited the offense with an RBI double to center field, scoring Savi Barrientos for the game’s first run. Moments later, Taylor Lozano delivered another RBI double to left field, bringing home Ray and giving Barbers Hill a 2-0 advantage.

The lead continued to grow in the fourth inning. Barrientos added a sacrifice fly before Izzy Lawrence and Ray followed with RBI singles, extending the margin to 5-0.

Then came the decisive fifth inning.

Barbers Hill exploded for six runs, highlighted by one swing from Ray. Barrientos and Lawrence each drove in runs before Ray launched a towering grand slam to center field, punctuating an 11-run offensive showcase and ending the game via the run rule.

Ray finished with one of the most memorable performances in a state championship game, going 3-for-4 with a double, home run and six RBIs. Barrientos went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Maricle added two hits and scored twice. Lozano collected two hits and an RBI as the Lady Eagles pounded out 13 hits and hit .565 as a team.

While the offense stole headlines, Bryant was equally impressive in the circle. The junior right-hander was nearly untouchable, tossing a five-inning no-hitter while striking out nine and retiring Aledo hitters throughout the afternoon. Bryant faced just 15 batters and did not allow a run as she improved to 31-1 on the season. Her dominant outing earned her Most Valuable Player honors for the championship game.

Aledo entered the championship with a 30-11 record and one of the state’s most explosive offenses, but Bryant and the Barbers Hill defense never allowed the Ladycats to gain momentum. Aledo finished without a hit and struck out nine times in the contest.

For Barbers Hill, the championship serves as both redemption and validation. After the disappointment of finishing runner-up a year ago, the Lady Eagles returned to Austin and delivered a performance worthy of a state champion. Their sixth state tournament appearance and second state title further cement the program’s place among Texas softball’s elite.

The 2026 championship trophy now heads back to Mont Belvieu, where another remarkable season will be remembered as the year the Lady Eagles soared back to the top of Texas softball.
