JONESBORO RALLIES PAST BROOKELAND TO CAPTURE THIRD STRAIGHT STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

AUSTIN — Championship teams always seem to find a way.

For the third consecutive season, Jonesboro proved exactly that.

Facing a five-run deficit in the second inning against a familiar opponent, the Lady Eagles never panicked. Instead, they chipped away, delivered timely hits, and completed another championship comeback, defeating Brookeland 6-5 Saturday morning at Red & Charline McCombs Field to claim the UIL Class 1A State Championship.

The victory secured Jonesboro’s third consecutive state title and added another memorable chapter to one of the state’s emerging softball dynasties.

The championship matchup was a rematch of last year’s state final, when Jonesboro edged Brookeland 9-8 in one of the most dramatic games of the 2025 state tournament. This year’s meeting proved nearly as exciting.

Early on, it appeared Brookeland might gain revenge.

After a scoreless first inning, the Lady Cats erupted for five runs in the bottom of the second. Elisabeth Lundquist opened the inning with a double, Lakyn Mott followed with an RBI single, and Brookeland took advantage of several Jonesboro miscues to build a commanding 5-0 lead. Kaelyn Strother added an RBI single, while RaLea Bennett and Camryn Morgan each drove in runs as Brookeland seized momentum.

But the Lady Eagles responded immediately.

After two quick outs in the top of the third, Lynlee Deats singled and Landree Deats followed with an infield hit to bring the tying run to the plate.

That’s when Ally Thorman delivered the biggest swing of the game.

The junior catcher launched a three-run home run to deep center field, instantly cutting Brookeland’s lead to 5-3 and bringing Jonesboro back to life. The blast scored both Deats sisters and completely changed the complexion of the championship game.

Thorman’s homer not only ignited the comeback but ultimately earned her State Championship Game MVP honors. The junior finished with three RBIs and scored twice in the victory.

Jonesboro continued to chip away.

In the fourth inning, Kylee Gould reached base and eventually scored when a Brookeland error allowed Zaylie Tanner to reach safely, trimming the deficit to 5-4.

The Lady Eagles then pulled even closer in the fifth. After Thorman worked a walk and Landri McFarlin singled, both runners executed a double steal, with Thorman racing home to tie the game at 5-5.

With momentum fully shifted, Jonesboro finally took the lead for good in the seventh.

Adalyna Andrade singled up the middle and advanced into scoring position. Moments later, Gould lined an RBI single through the middle, bringing home Andrade with what proved to be the championship-winning run.

Jonesboro’s defense and pitching then made the lead stand.

Landree Deats earned the victory, allowing five runs over 6.1 innings while battling through early adversity. After being lifted during Brookeland’s five-run second inning, Deats returned to the circle in the third and settled down, helping keep the Lady Cats off the scoreboard the rest of the way. Andrade also contributed valuable relief work during the second-inning rally before Jonesboro turned back to Deats.

Brookeland threatened several times after building its early lead, but the Lady Eagles repeatedly came up with critical defensive plays. Jonesboro stranded seven Brookeland runners and held the Lady Cats scoreless over the final five innings.

Offensively, Jonesboro collected 10 hits. Gould and McFarlin each had two hits, Andrade added two more, and the Deats sisters each recorded key hits during the comeback effort. Thorman’s home run and three RBIs were the difference.

Brookeland also finished with 10 hits. Paige Powell and Lundquist each recorded doubles, while Strother had two hits and an RBI. Despite the strong offensive start, the Lady Cats were unable to add to their five-run second inning.

For Jonesboro, the victory cemented its place among the state’s elite programs.

Three consecutive state championships.

Two consecutive state championship victories over Brookeland.

And another trophy heading back to Hamilton County.

The Lady Eagles once again proved that champions never stop fighting.
