INTERVIEW

Stevie, do you remember when you first started playing softball?

Yes, I started playing when I was 7 years old.

So when did you kmow you were pretty good at this game?

I’d say whenever I joined my first select team with the Peppers, I think it was 8U, so it was pretty young. My coaches always saw something special in me, like, my God given talents. So yes, because of that I’d say eight whenever I started playing select and started taking it serious with traveling and everything.

Who’s been a big influence on you and your softball journey?

My dad has been a really big influence. He’s taught me since I was seven up until now. He’s my biggest supporter, my biggest fan. He’s taught me almost everything I know other than my coaches now. He played baseball and could have played in college but he went to the Army instead. So I got my talents from him.

How do you feel about this year’s team?

This year we have a lot of good freshmen coming in, so hopefully we get to make it to playoffs. We should be a lot better this year. We have an amazing coaching staff coaching us, so we should do well, better than last year.

What do you think are the key things that have to happen for Magnolia to make the playoffs this year?

I’d say just everybody coming together, like having the key hits, the key pitching. Last year we had good pitchers, but we didn’t have a dominant pitcher. We have a freshman coming in that should hopefully get that job done. But yeah, I’d say just all of us coming together as a team, all of us just wanting it. Having the key hits middle, beginning, and end of the game.

How do you see your role on this year’s team?

My freshman and sophomore year, I caught almost every single game. And then last year I hurt my thumbs so I didn’t get to play the first half of the year. I just got to hit only, and then the second half I got to play outfield. So this year I’d say my role as a catcher, I want to be a leader on the field. I think that this year, since I should be able to catch almost every game again, I can be that leader on the field and helping my team win victories.

And how is the thumb now?

I go to physical therapy every week, so it’s getting better. It’s been an injury I’ve had for the past two years, so I just have to push through the pain and then strengthen it. I’m cleared to catch but it’s just what I can tolerate.

What do you hope teammates, coaches and fans remember about Stevie South when you finish your high school year?

I hope they remember as me as a leader, a fun teammate and somebody that they could always come to for absolutely anything. I just hope that they remember me as a fun, outgoing person.

Moving to college opportunities. Why UT?

Whenever I was getting recruited, my two main things were a very good academic school and a very good softball program and UT fit both of those very well. They obviously have a great academic program and obviously there’s the national championship with those amazing coaches. I love their culture. I love the coaches. I just love how it feels to be there.
