INTERVIEW

When did you start playing softball?

When I was four years old. My sister and I are 10 ½ years apart and she played softball. So I grew up in a dugout.

When did you know softball was something you really wanted to do?

I saw my older sister getting recruited and I was like “I want to do this too.” So from a young age, I knew this was something I wanted to do. And I always wanted to be better than her and she pushed me and wanted me to be better than her. She ended up playing golf at Lubbock Christian. So seeing her accomplish her dreams made me really work to accomplish mine as well.

Was there anyone else who had a big influence on your softball journey?

Definitely my Dad. My Dad has been my coach ever since I was 4. He started all of this. He played D1 baseball at Texas State. He had the background in baseball and he saw a drive in me and he poured into that day and night. The other person I would say in Hannah Wells. She pushed me. She has been my best friend since I was 8. And we’ve always had silent competitions with each other. Like if we are out in the field hitting bp, if she hits 5 home runs, I have to go hit six. We’ve always pushed each other that way. On and off the field.

Talk about winning the three consecutive state championships.

When I was in 8th grade, Coahoma made it to the state championship but lost. My friend Hannah was a freshman. I was in the stands and I looked at my dad and said “When I’m there, we are going to win.” So the next year, the whole team worked really hard to get back to that point. We got there and ended up pulling that one out. That was one of the hardest games we played. It was against Santa Gertrudis and was a close game but we pulled it out. The second year we played Madi Doty’s team (Grandview). And that was a tough game too. But my favorite championship we won was the last one because all of our seniors were there. Six of them. And five of those were starters, And it was the last time I’d ever get to play high school softball with Hannah. And that was really emotional. Winning two wasn’t easy but winning three was even harder. So last year was my favorite year and favorite championship.

You did lose some big starters. Talk about this year’s team.

We are going to have to basically come up with a new outfield. We have to find someone to throw in the circle. Replacing Hannah in the circle is going to be hard. But offensively we are going to be good. And defensively, we’ll be fine too. Perseverance is our word this year. Just fighting through and trying to find the fire under us and the work ethic. I feel like there’s a lot of fingers pointing at us saying ‘What are y’all going to do now?” But I think that we are going to prove some people wrong. It’s not going to be easy but that’s what makes it fun sometimes.

How do you see your role on this team in your senior year?

I wouldn’t say my role changes any. I feel like our team has always considered me as one of our leaders on the team since my freshman year I walked on the field and said we were going to change some things. So that’s what I did and that’s what Hannah and I worked really hard to do really hard. I think now with Hannah not being here and not being my sidekick, it’s going to be a little harder just because it is on me now. I want it to be on me. I want to be able to feed into my teammates and I want them to look at me as a leader and as kind of a peace and sense of comfort. Because when things do get tough sometimes you look to somebody and I wanna be that person to be able to say ‘Hey, it’s okay. We got this. Let’s just keep going.’ Win or lose, we’re playing softball and that’s what we did when we were four years old, and that’s what we’re gonna do when we’re 18 years old.

College softball next year, Why UT?

It’s been my goal since I was little. Your family always has a team. And you don’t really know why. You just grow up always watching their football games, wearing their stuff all the time. And UT is our team. My dad was able to watch Longhorn Network all the time so that’s just kind of the team that he followed and rooted for. My dad wanted to play baseball at Texas. My sister wanted to play softball at Texas. But it didn’t happen for them, so it’s got to happen for me. Third time’s a charm. I started going to camps and stuff and I fell in love with the coaching staff. I fell in love with the campus, the field, just everything. But definitely the coaching staff. They’ve made me feel like one of them since day one. It’s truly one of the best coaching staffs, if not the best coaching staff in the country.
