INTERVIEW
Madi, when did you get serious about softball?
When I was little I did softball just for fun. I had friends on the team. It was just fun. But when I started playing Select, I realized that this is something I want to do for a long time. I truly loved it and I thought “I’m pretty good at it.”
Talk about winning the state championship last year.
We had been there three years in a row and we never quite finished it. But this year we knew coming into the season that we were going to win and we were going to do everything in our power to win. And in that championship game, we kept the energy high and we did it. And after we won it was a big relief. Like we finally did this and all of our hard work paid off.
How do you feel about this year’s team?
We’re a super young team this year. We graduated 16 seniors. But in my grade we have a core group of girls that are going to be leaders for the younger ones and just pull them up and make them understand what we have to do to get back to that state championship.
What do you think it will take to get back to the championship game?
A lot of hard work. That’s all you can really do. And just being comfortable in pressure situations. Learning how to handle those.
So what do you like about this year’s team?
We are super close. Going to a small school, everyone knows everyone. So that helps us as a team. We’ve known each other for years and we’ve hung around each other for years.
How do you see your role on this team?
Definitely being a leader on the team. Just help getting the underclassmen to understand what we need to do. And obviously, as the pitcher, just controlling what I can control, throwing strikes and getting batters out.
When you are pitching do you have a personality change?
Oh yes. When I’m not pitching I feel like I’m a bubbly kind of person. But once I get out there to pitch, I look mean. I think my face goes blank and I just lock in and focus on getting batters out.
Talk about your USA Softball experience.
Oh my gosh. It was such a great experience. Everyone’s end goal if you play softball is to wear the three letters across your chest. And getting to do that at such a young age. It’s such an honor. And to be able to have 3 gold medals as a 17 year old is amazing. It was really cool to be able to play different cultures and different countries. They don’t speak the same language and so it was just different. And they play different.
Why UT?
Well, to begin with, I wasn’t a UT fan at all. But we got invited to a team camp my freshman year of high school and I got to meet one-on-one with Coach White. He talked about pitching and all kinds of stuff and I just really enjoyed him and how much he knew about pitching. From that moment on, I thought “This is where I want to be.” I got to look around the city and I loved the city. I love the coaches, the atmosphere and the city. So I’m excited to be going there.
