INTERVIEW

Eva, when did you know softball was a future sport for you?

I tried out many sports when I was younger. I did soccer and then I wanted to try something new. So I tried basketball, tennis, softball and I really enjoyed softball. I think hitting was probably my favorite part when I first started. I did league ball around 8, 9 and 10. And then at 11 I decided to do it competitively and it just went up from there.

Tough loss in the playoffs vs eventual State Champion Waco Midway. Talk about that series.

That was actually a long trip to play the game. They scored early in the game and we were behind. And then Alyssa Snead hit a three-run home to put us up by one. That was so crazy. Everyone was excited because it was exactly what we need. Then they scored in the bottom of the 7th to tie it. It was frustrating because we were so close. We ended up battling it out for three more innings then unfortunately we had a couple of errors and they ended up scoring and we lost the game. The game didn’t end until 10:00 pm that night and I didn’t go to bed until 1:30 or 2:00 AM. I had to take a physics test the next morning and immediately travel back for Game 2. We were really focused on the game because we really wanted to go to State. We knew we still had a chance. We played a lot more relaxed as far as defense and was 0-0 going into the sixth inning. And then they scored a run in the 6th and we couldn’t get a score. So another tough loss. Just some really close games where if we could have done little things differently we would have won and we would have been going to state.

How do you feel about this year’s Conroe team?

Pretty strong. We have nine returning seniors. So very similar to last year’s team except for the two seniors we lost, our shortstop and our catcher, which are big leadership positions. But we do have seniors this year who are going to step up and fill those roles. We have seven commits in my class which I think is the most that Conroe Softball has ever had. So it’s a pretty strong class and I think we are all pretty tight because we all have been on the varsity together for the past 3 year.

What will it take for Conroe to get to the State Championship this year?

I think it’s going to take everyone buying in just a little bit more and just making sure that we put team before ourselves. A quote that I’m going to hold onto is “Leave No Doubt.” Just leave it all on the field. I feel like because it’s our last year together, we all will just be more willing to give it a little bit more. So I’m going into it with the mindset of empty the tank and leave no doubt.

How do you see role on this year’s team?

As a pitcher on the field, it’s kind of my role to be a leader just because I have the ball every single pitch. And I know that the kind of energy I put out is what the team is going to feed off. And so I want to make sure that I’m always engaged and encouraging and thinking positive about the game. I do think also that my role is going to be picking up my teammates and motivating them, but also making sure we hold ourselves accountable so we can reach the high standard that we want.

What are you like in the circle? Are you different there than other times?

When I’m pitching, yes. I’ve had many people tell me that I look scary when I’m pitching. I don’t do that on purpose but I think I just kind of flip a switch and go into pitching mode. My goal is just to dominate the other team and do whatever I can to make sure whoever is standing in the box is out. So it is a bit of a mental shift, but I think it’s mostly the competitiveness.

Next level. Why Duke?

I think the biggest thing was academics because I wanted to go somewhere where I could study engineering. And they said they build the practice schedule around everyone’s class schedules. And so that was a big thing for me to be able to get a degree in something I wanted. Also, the location is really cool. It’s a smaller school but still highly competitive. It’s really been my dream school since my freshman year when I started researching. The other big thing is the coaching staff. I loved the coaches and I felt like they understood me a little bit more that some of the places I visited. All around, Duke just checked every box. I feel so blessed to have the opportunity to go play there.
