INTERVIEW

Shelbi, when did you start playing softball?

Oh, I was young. I was probably like five or six. My older sister played softball so I grew up around the softball field. And so I got into it early.

When did softball become a big thing for you?

In 10U I played on the Bombers and they were competitive. It was on that team that I really started to like playing softball and realizing that I can actually hang with all these girls.

Who has been a big influence or big encourager on your softball journey.

Definitely my parents because. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them. They would take me everywhere and make sure I get to every lesson and things like that. But I would also say my sister because I grew up watching her play. And I saw her achieve her dreams. She plays at Nicholls State in Louisiana. Seeing her do that and love it, made me also love the game more.

Navarro missed the playoffs last year. How do you feel about this year’s team?

We’ve been working all year where last year we only started softball during softball season. This year we’ve been doing it the whole year. And I think we’ve already progressed so much more. So I think we’re going to be more competitive this year. And I think all of us want it really bad and we’re all in it for the right reasons. I think we will work together as a team.

What do you like about this year’s team?

I like how all of us like are close. We can have fun while being on the field. We know each other better because it’s a lot of the girls from last year playing together again this year. So we know how we work on the field together. We can have fun and relax and not be stressed out.

What do you think it will take for you guys to get to the playoffs?

We got put into a different district this year so hopefully that’ll help us a little bit. But I think it’s just going to take us playing our game and playing together and not so much worrying about who we’re playing. Just play our game and let that work for itself.

How do you see your role on this year’s team?

I’m gonna try to be a leader. We do have younger people on the team and people that didn’t play all the time. They might get stressed out a lot more, so I’m going to try and make sure everybody stays calm and remember that it’s still just a game for fun. And on the field obviously try to be a leader and stay consistent with my play so that everyone else can follow.

Finishing up your high school career, what do you hope Coaches and teammates remember about Shelbi Stevens?

I hope they remember that I made the game fun. I like to have fun whenever I play and I feel like I do a lot better whenever I’m relaxed and just being myself. So I hope more people can see that and realize that the game is still fun even though it’s hard.

Next level of softball. Why Kansas?

I loved it as soon as I got on campus. The campus was beautiful and then meeting my coaches and the girls that were on the team was incredible. The people there had no clue who I was or why I was there but they were so nice to me. Like even at the shops and restaurants. Literally everywhere, everyone was just super nice and it felt like a home away from home, which is what I was looking for.
